Mexican Construction
writes, "Mexican Construction
© 2008 By Lee Rafferty

First of all, be aware that Mexican construction workers do just that; they work there tails off. Most of the construction is done by hand and It's rare to see any construction equipment, smaller than a backhoe, used at a construction sight. Most of the time, all construction equipment is hand tools and material (concrete & mortar) is mixed by hand and transported to wherever it's needed (even the roof) in a 5 or 6 gallon bucket. I've watched as bricks were being unloaded from a truck. One guy will be in the truck bed, picking up a stack of 6 bricks and tossing them to another guy on the ground. The guy on the ground catches all 6 bricks in a stack, without dropping any, and stacks them in a neat pile by the road. I've seen this done from a pickup truck, with 100 bricks in it and I've seen it done from a flatbed 2 ton truck with 2000 - 3000 bricks on it. They don't seem to get tired. Some will use an angle grinder or skill saw for certain projects, but they aren't common.

However, now that I've praised there abilities and stamina (well deserved), I'll tell you something else. They're not very neat or conscientious during the construction process. If they're building a new house, or remodeling an existing one, next to yours, you can expect to have some cleanup to do when they're done. To get the job done, they don't think about damaging or destroying anything in there way. It can be fixed when they're done. Concrete and mortar gets slopped around, rocks and bricks get buried in the yard, and most of the trash is carried to an empty lot and thrown there. They also use bailing wire to hold forms in place for pouring concrete and even to hold scafolding together. They think nothing of throwing a length of it in your lawn, to be hit with a weed eater or lawnmower. Watch out for it, especially if they're constructing a wall between you and the house next door. If you complain about anything, they're very polite and will make half-hearted corrections to satisfy you, but they won't quit doing it. I've found, the best course of action is to just wait until they're done and see what happens. They may clean some of it up and they may not. At any rate, you can't keep up with them and clean as they go. It's best to just survey the damages when they're finished and make corrections and repairs then.
