The Plant Lady
What to do with your Amaryllis Flower that you received for Christmas?
So you planted an amaryllis bulb for Christmas and it bloomed beautifully. So what do you do with it now? (by the way, if it hasn’t bloomed yet, it can flower until the end of June but blooms for longer periods in winter)
After it has stopped flowering and the blooms are gone and the stems starts to sag, cut the stem back to the bulb top.
Water and fertilize it during the summer, which encourages the leaves to grow and mature.
In the fall, the leaves start to turn yellow. When this happens, cut them back to 2 inches above the bulb and remove the bulb from the soil. (you could have planted it outside during the warm months)
Store the bulb in a cool, dark place for a minimum of 6 weeks. If you happen to store it in the refrigerator, apples will sterilize the bulb, so don’t put any apples in the fridge during this time.
After 6 weeks, you can plant it again for another Christmas season of flowering. It should bloom in 8 weeks. |
