Dear Music Lovers and Dancers:
Roberto Cerda Birthday Party Wednesday April 30th
La Tasca
If a life well lived can be measured by the quantity and quality of one’s friends, La Tasca owner Roberto Cerda is a very wealthy man.

La Tasca was full to capacity Wednesday night and everyone had a fantastic time. There was a delicious Mexican buffet with all kinds of goodies to eat, and it seemed just about every musician in the area came by to help make the music the highlight of the evening.
To start the evening, the La Tasca Trio,
featuring Roberto himself on guitar, Jimmy Barto on trumpet, and myself on vocals, was joined by Chuy on beat box and Paco on trumpet, and Alejandro on keyboard. (Chuy and Paco are regulars from the Latin Jazz Combo Wednesday nights at Tasca, and Alejandro does a solo piano act Tuesdays there.) This combo played a few standards like “summertime”, a jazzy rendition of ZZ Top’s blues classic “jesus just left Chicago, and Chicago’s “color my world” and “beginnings”. The crowd was up and dancing from the very first note, and you could tell the musicians were really enjoying jamming with each other.
Next up, Bossa Brasil kept the house hopping with their unique Brazilian percussive groove, and I really enjoyed Alejandro sitting in with them on keyboards. The dance floor remained packed for their entire set as well. (See my column in last month’s issue for more on Bossa.)
Then Flip and David from the Tallboys Band got up and jammed with Roberto sitting in. Highlights of their set included a reggae beat version of “knocking on heaven’s door” and the rascal’s good lovin’. Finding a spot to dance was again a challenge during their good time set.
Capping off the evening, Gabriela Gomez did a few of her Mexican Bohemia songs with Roberto’s accompaniment. Gabriela has a lovely voice, and she can be heard every Sunday at Tasca at 3 pm.
La Tasca is a fabulous venue, the food is always excellent, the view and the breeze off the Lake are unmatched, and of course the music is some of the top talent available here at lakeside.
Here is the current schedule of music, start time 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted:

All the restaurants have phone #’s and most have websites so that you can check times and confirm the musicians. You will notice that some of the restaurants have cover and/or minimums for the music. If you have one of those truly great evenings, you may want to add something to the “tip jar”. Most of the musicians work for tips only.
